Fictional Assault on Gay Couple

We welcome the Oversight Board’s decision today on this case, which deals with a video posted to Facebook depicting a gay couple being beaten and kicked by a group of people. At the end of the video, the sentence "Do your part this pride month" is displayed.

Upon initial review, Meta left this content up. However, after the board brought the case to our attention, we determined the content violates our Hate Speech policy, as laid out in the Facebook Community Standards, and removed the content. Meta removes content that targets people on the basis of a protected characteristic, including sexual orientation.

There will be no further updates to this case.
