Heritage of Pride

DEC 18, 2023

We welcome the Oversight Board’s decision today on this case which deals with an image posted to Instagram with a long caption that included a quote by the African-American activist and writer James Baldwin. The passage focused on the power of love to unite humanity and the user in particular highlighted the power of queer pride. An image at the bottom of the post shows a man holding a sign requesting to be addressed as “Mr.” before using a word frequently used as a slur against gay persons.

Upon initial review, Meta removed each of these four pieces of content for violating our Hate Speech policy, as laid out in the Facebook Community Standards and Instagram Community Guidelines. However, after the board brought the case to our attention, we determined that we had removed the content in error and reinstated the post.

There will be no further updates to this case.
