We welcome the Oversight Board's decision today, June 4, 2024, on this case bundle which deals with two videos that share news reporting on the war in Gaza – one posted to Instagram and one posted to Facebook. The first video on Instagram depicts a news report from Channel 4 news reporting on the killing of a Palestinian child with a caption that states the video does not “promote dangerous organizations” and is “a story on the Palestinian Red Crescent…and about a Palestinian family both of which were murdered.” The second video posted to Facebook includes a video from Al-Jazeera which contains reporting and analysis on hostage release negotiations between Israel and Hamas. During the segment, the report shares Hamas-generated content related to the fighting in Gaza and the release of hostages.
Upon initial review, Meta removed this content for violating our Dangerous Organizations and Individuals policy, as laid out in the Facebook Community Standards. However, after the board brought the case to our attention, we determined that we had removed the content in error and reinstated each post.
There will be no further updates to this case.
