We welcome the Oversight Board’s decision today on this case which deals with an image posted as a comment to another user’s photo on Facebook. The image contained an antisemitic caricature of a Jewish man wearing a yellow six-pointed star with the word “Jude”, a monkey with the letters “BLM” overlaid, and a suitcase that appears to contain a machine operated by the Jewish man overlaid with the word “Media.”
Upon initial review, Meta left this content up. However, after the board brought the case to our attention, we determined the content violates our Hate Speech policy, as laid out in the Facebook Community Standards, and removed the content. Meta removes content that dehumanizes a person or group of people on the basis of their protected characteristic(s) by comparing them to animals in general or specific types of animals that are culturally perceived as intellectually or physically inferior. Meta also removes content that contains harmful stereotypes, including claims that Jewish people control financial, political, or media institutions.
There will be no further updates to this case.
