We welcome the Oversight Board’s decision today, February 27, 2024, on this case which deals with a video posted to Facebook. The video shows the silhouettes of three people with those on the sides pulling the one in the middle up from a body of water. The people on the sides have the Arabic words for “West” and “South” on their chests, while the person being lifted up has the word “East.” Behind them, parts of a person wearing a Libyan military uniform can be seen. The meaning of the video is not entirely clear, but possibly conveys that the West and South can rescue the Easterners of Libya, but may be under threat from the watching military. The content does not contain any references to a designated organization or individual.
Upon initial review, Meta removed this content for violating our Dangerous Organizations and Individuals policy, as laid out in the Facebook Community Standards. However, after the board brought the case to our attention, we determined that we had removed the content in error and reinstated the post.
There will be no further updates to this case.
