We welcome the Oversight Board’s decision today, March 7, 2024, on this case which deals with a picture shared to Facebook. The picture is of a cartoon image that depicts three members of the Taliban sitting in a machine that is pressing down on a group of women. One of the individuals in the cartoon holds the switch of a device that measures the level of oppression towards women and the caption refers to women’s oppression under the Taliban regime.
Upon initial review, Meta removed this content for violating our Dangerous Organizations and Individuals policy, as laid out in the Facebook Community Standards. However, after the Board brought the case to our attention, we determined that we had removed the content in error and reinstated the post.
There will be no further updates to this case.
