Governance Innovation

UPDATED MAR 19, 2026
Meta's approach to governance is built on a simple principle: when decisions affect people’s ability to express themselves freely, those decisions shouldn't be made in isolation. That's why we actively seek out innovative ways to include more voices into the decision making around how our platforms are governed and how we develop technologies that people use every day.
Meta took a first step in developing industry-leading governance by launching the Oversight Board in 2020. You can read more about the work of the Oversight Board here.
In 2022, we began piloting Community Forums, a form of organized public discourse focused on tech’s biggest issues.
Most recently, we’ve also piloted Community Alignment, a program that incorporates diverse, representative user preferences into the development of AI models.
The Oversight Board has a mandate to protect free expression and it provides Meta with tremendous insight to ensure decisions about our policies and products are in the best interest of users. Community Forums place more control in the hands of users, helping ensure that our decision making incorporates perspectives from outside the company. Community Alignment is the latest step toward getting more direct input from the people interacting with our products, helping us build better and more personalized LLMs for people around the world.
We will continue to explore new forms of governance and innovative ways to democratize and distribute power as a means to empower people to have a greater voice in the development of our policies and products.
