Facebook Groups Feed AI system

UPDATED MAR 12, 2025
The content you see on Facebook Groups Feed is selected, ranked and delivered to you by an artificial intelligence (AI) system. Within one AI system, multiple machine learning models work together to deliver your experience. These models and their input signals are dynamic and they change frequently as the system learns and improves over time.

Overview of Facebook Groups Feed

When you view and interact with Facebook Groups Feed, one of the underlying AI systems shows you status updates, photos, videos and other content from groups you follow and from groups you might be interested in.
Note: Your Groups Feed might also include other recommended content, such as new groups or new community chats to join. That content is not powered by the AI we describe in this system card.
How Facebook Groups Feed works
The AI system behind Groups Feed automatically determines which posts show up in your Groups Feed, and in what order, by predicting what you'll find most valuable and relevant. Here’s how it works:
  1. Gather inventory
First, the system collects all eligible posts. This content includes posts shared in groups you’re a member of, posts that were created before your last login that you haven’t seen and posts from groups you’re not a member of.
  2. Leverage signals
Next, the system scores each post based on a variety of input signals, such as the type of post, similarity to other content and how well the post matches what you tend to interact with. At this stage, the system applies integrity processes to help reduce the distribution of problematic content. Then the system narrows the pool of eligible content to approximately 200 of the most relevant posts for you.
  3. Make predictions
From there, the AI system has models that help it make predictions about content you’ll find most relevant and valuable.
  4. Rank posts by score
Finally, the system calculates a relevance score for about 200 posts and puts them in order by this score. Posts that the system predicts will provide more value for you are shown higher in your Groups Feed. The system also tries to ensure your Groups Feed has a balanced mix of content types. That means, for example, you wouldn’t see multiple video posts in a row, but rather a variety of post types.
How to customize what you see

How the AI delivers content to you
We want you to see content you enjoy and find interesting. To achieve this, the AI system has models that help it make predictions about content you’ll find most relevant and valuable. These prediction models use underlying input signals to help select content you’re most likely to engage with.
