Niger Coup Cartoon

UPDATED DEC 18, 2023
2023-047-FB-UA
We welcome the Oversight Board’s decision today on this case, which deals with a cartoon image posted to Facebook of a boot labeled “Niger” kicking a woman wearing a red hat and a dress. The dress has a geographical outline of Africa on it and it is unclear who the woman represents.
Upon initial review, Meta removed this content for violating our Hate Speech policy, as laid out in the Facebook Community Standards. However, after the board brought the case to our attention, we determined that we had removed the content in error and reinstated the post.
There will be no further updates to this case.
