Today, January 20, 2026, the Oversight Board selected a case referred by Meta regarding a widely followed Instagram account that was disabled. The referral includes five posts from the Instagram account made between December 2024 and July 2025.
Meta determined that the account repeatedly violated Meta’s policies over the previous year, as laid out in our Account Integrity policy in the Meta Community Standards. Multiple posts included visual threats of violence and harassment against a journalist. Other posts featured homophobic slurs against politicians and content depicting a sex act, alleging misconduct against minorities. Meta determined that the posts violated the Violence and Incitement, Bullying and Harassment, Hateful Conduct, and Adult Nudity and Sexual Activity Community Standards.
Meta referred these cases to the Board because we found them significant and difficult as they create tension between our values of safety, voice, and dignity.
We will implement the Board's decision once it has finished deliberating, and will update this post accordingly. Please see the Board's website for the decision when they issue it.
Case decision
We welcome the Oversight Board's decision on this case. The Board upheld Meta’s decision to permanently disable an account.
After conducting a review of the recommendations provided by the Board, we will update this post with initial responses to those recommendations.
