AI Video Faking UK Politician’s Immigration Views
UPDATED MAY 27, 2026
Standard Case 2026-034-FB-UA
On May 21, 2026, the Oversight Board selected a case appealed by a user regarding a video in a Facebook album that includes multiple pieces of content. The first video in the album appears to be AI-generated and shows a UK Labour Party politician saying, “Refugees are welcome here, even if they rape our women, because white people do that too.” The album’s caption accuses the politician of tax evasion without providing evidence.
The album also includes another video showing people protesting, including a man waving a Palestinian flag with seemingly AI-generated audio of him praising Antifa, a left-wing, anti-fascist movement. A final image that appears to be real rather than AI-generated shows several women, including the politician depicted in the first video, holding anti-far-right protest signs and names them.
Meta determined that the content did not violate our policies on Bullying and Harassment, Hateful Conduct, or Misinformation policy, as laid out in the Community Standards, and left the content up. Under our Bullying and Harassment policy, Meta removes “unwanted manipulated imagery” for certain persons (e.g. private adults); however, we do not extend these protections for adult public figures. Under our Hateful Conduct policy, Meta prohibits content “targeting a person or group of people…on the basis of their…protected characteristic(s).” We determined the content was an assertion against the actions of some refugees rather than a generalization equating all or most refugees with criminals. Under our Misinformation policy, Meta removes “misinformation where it is likely to directly contribute to the risk of imminent physical harm” or interfere with the functioning of political processes. Meta also determined it would not merit an informative AI label and notes that the video seems intended for comedic effect, making it unlikely that it creates a particularly high risk of materially deceiving the public on a matter of public importance.
We will implement the Board's decision once it has finished deliberating, and will update this post accordingly. Please see the Board's website for the decision when they issue it.
