In the 2021 case Post Discussing a Substance with Psychoactive Properties, Meta removed an Instagram post discussing the benefits of Ayahuasca—a psychoactive plant-based brew which has well-documented ceremonial and religious uses among indigenous peoples in South America. The Board overturned Meta's decision, required the post to be restored, and recommended that Meta amend the Restricted Goods and Services policy to permit positive discussions of traditional or religious uses of non-medical drugs with historical evidence. Following a policy development process based on this recommendation, Meta updated this policy in 2023.
What was the impact of Meta’s implementation of this recommendation?
Using Meta Content Library data, the Board identified a 10.8% increase in posts mentioning Ayahuasca on Facebook between 2021 and 2023, with approximately 5% of these expressing positivity about an experience with the substance.
