Facebook Video AI system
UPDATED MAR 7, 2025
The content you see on your Facebook Video is selected, ranked and delivered to you by an artificial intelligence (AI) system. Within one AI system, multiple machine learning models work together to deliver your experience. These models and their input signals are dynamic and they change frequently as the system learns and improves over time.
Overview of Facebook Video
When you view and interact with Facebook Video, one of the underlying AI systems delivers a range of video types that may match your preferences. You’ll find this content in the Video tab, and it might include reels, music, gaming, shows and other videos. This is content you may be interested in from creators you may not follow.
Note: Your Video feed might also include advertisements. That content is not powered by the AI we describe in this system card.
How Facebook Video works
The AI system behind Facebook Video automatically determines which videos appear in your Video tab, and in what order, by predicting which videos you are most likely to engage with. Here’s how it works:
- Gather inventoryFirst, the system gathers all potential videos that might interest you. This selection is based on a variety of factors including what you’ve watched and engaged with recently.
- Leverage signalsNext, the AI system considers a variety of input signals about each video. A lightweight model is run to select approximately 1,000 of the most relevant videos.
- Make predictionsThe AI system has models that help it make predictions about videos you’ll find most relevant and valuable.
- Rank posts by scoreThen, the system calculates a relevance score for the top 200 videos and puts them in order by this score. Videos that the system predicts will provide more value for you are shown to you first. Finally, certain integrity processes are applied to all results. These determine which integrity measures, if any, need to be applied to the videos selected for ranking.
How to customize what you see
Your experience on Facebook Video is personalized based on your activity, and you have options to control or customize what you see. Below, we describe how to do this with different in-product features. Options shown here may not be available to everyone.
Follow
To see more content from a particular Page or person, you can also click “Follow” next to their name or from the three-dot overflow menu.
Prioritize
You can select the people and Pages you want to prioritize. This influences how videos are selected and ranked, so you'll see more of what you’re interested in.
Report content
If you see content on Facebook Video that you think goes against our Community Standards, you can report it to us. You can also report videos that you think are spam or false news by clicking “Report video” from the overflow menu.
Select video types
You can select the types of videos you want to see. For example, clicking “For you” will show you all videos, whereas selecting other categories such as Live, Reels, Music or Gaming will show you videos on those specific topics.
Hide video
You can hide a video by clicking “X.” The system will then attempt to limit similar content from showing up in your feed.
Discover non-personalized videos
To discover videos that are not personalized specifically to you, use the search feature in the Feeds tab. By doing so, your search results will be based on the search term you enter. Learn more.
Show more/show less
This feature lets you customize what you see in your feed. Clicking “Show more” or “Show less” on a video will temporarily increase or decrease the ranking score for that post and other posts like it.
