Facebook Notifications AI system

The content you see on your Facebook Notifications is selected, ranked and delivered to you by an artificial intelligence (AI) system. Within one AI system, multiple machine learning models work together to deliver your experience. These models and their input signals are dynamic and they change frequently as the system learns and improves over time.

Overview of Facebook Notifications

When you view and interact with Facebook, one of the underlying AI systems delivers notifications to you, such as comments, recommendations from friends and suggested content. These notifications may appear directly in Facebook to alert you to activities, updates or other information. Outside of Facebook, these notifications may be sent to your device through push notifications.

How Facebook Notifications works

Generation
When an event on Facebook occurs, a notification candidate is generated. Examples of events include when Facebook has a recommendation for you or when a person, Page or group you follow has activity on Facebook.
Filtering
Next, the system filters the notification candidates and attempts to remove any that you do not want to receive based on your settings.
Apply additional filters
Then, certain integrity processes are applied to all notifications. These determine which integrity measures, if any, need to be applied to the notifications selected.
At this point, some notifications are delivered to you in the notification tab in Facebook, such as reactions and comments on your posts. These notifications may also be pushed to your device depending on your settings and the push decision (see step 6).
Score notifications
Next, the system individually scores the notifications that have not yet been sent to you. Scores are produced based on a variety of factors, such as the type of notification, similarity to other items and how well the notification matches what you tend to interact with.
Make and analyze predictions
Then, the system compares the AI system of each notification with predictions, described below, and makes a decision as to whether or not to send the notification to you in Facebook.
Push decision
Next, steps 4 and 5 are repeated and another decision is made as to whether or not to push the notification to your device. You will receive push notifications only if you've enabled them in the settings on your device.
Rank notifications by score
Finally, the system ranks all new and recently seen notifications and puts them in order by score. This step occurs at the time you click to view the notification tab in Facebook. Notifications that the system predicts will be the most valuable or relevant to you are shown to you first.

How to customize what you see

Your experience on Facebook Notifications is personalized based on your activity, and you have options to control or customize what you see. Below, we describe how to do this with different in-product features. Options shown here may not be available to everyone.

Turn notifications on or off

You have a variety of options to customize which notifications you receive and how you receive them, such as by turning different types of notifications on or off. For example, if you turn notifications on for a post, you'll get notified whenever someone comments on the post, but you won't get notified when someone replies to a comment.

Manage notifications

You can select which notifications to receive and specify how you would like to receive them. For example, you can choose to receive notifications for comments or tags, but not for friend requests or group posts. You can also choose the type of notifications you want to receive, such as push notifications.

Unfollow

You can use the unfollow option to stop receiving notifications about certain people, Pages or groups.
