We welcome the Oversight Board’s decision today, February 27, 2024, on this case which deals with a video posted to Instagram. The video shows Abdul Baset al-Sarout, a famous Syrian football player and rebel against the Syrian government who was killed in 2019. In the video, Sarout encourages Syrians to resist the regime of Bashar al-Assad. The content does not contain any references to a designated organization or individual.

Upon initial review, Meta removed the content for violating our Dangerous Organizations and Individuals policy, as laid out in the Facebook Community Standards and Instagram Community Guidelines. However, after the board brought the case to our attention, we determined that we had removed the piece of content in error and reinstated the post.

There will be no further updates to this case.
